Develop healthy families and workplaces
Are you looking for opportunities to improve health and fitness at home and/or at work?
As well as improving your own the health and fitness do you also want to improve the health and fitness of your family and/or work colleagues but find it a difficult task?Many children no longer walk to school and play outdoors the way they used to. Changes in technology see us working longer and exercising less and, well, there are so many easy food options regardless of age it is a real challenge to maintain your weight at a healthy level. There are numerous problems associated with the decline in health and fitness and these include:
- Health crisis;
- Lost potential;
- Cost to community;
- Family trauma; and,
- Lost productivity at home and at work.
The cost of poor health and fitnessThe costs of poor health and fitness are too numerous to list here but they have widespread implications for our families, workplaces and communities so much so that basic infrastructure like hospitals, public transport, cars and planes no longer are able to serve some members of our society.
For families some of the costs of poor health and fitness include:
- Lack of energy for family activities;
- Increased health costs;
- Decline in life style;
- Inability to achieve desired futures;
- Illness, premature aging and death;
- Emotional problems associated with lack of fitness and health; and,
- Relationship difficulties that due to the above factors.
At work the costs are also considerable and include:
- People can’t perform and can’t produce as well as they might;
- Time is lost through illness and poor health;
- Replacement staff are required for ill staff;
- In some countries employers face higher health care costs;
- Teams and relationships suffer due to absence and different energy levels;
- Opportunities are lost; and,
- Profitability suffers;
It is the lost opportunity of poor health and fitness that is the true hidden cost to our families and workplaces as we just don’t realise how much worse off we are when we are less fit than we could be. Don’t believe us?, try carrying around a suitcase all day, no wheels but lifting it everywhere you go. You will soon discover you cover less distance, have less energy and feel more tired as the day goes on which will then impact your mood, productivity and desire for other activities.
Health and fitness creates possibilities and quality of lifeThe potential of healthy families and workplaces is immense as it impacts all aspects of our lives. Healthy children are better placed to live long healthy lives and achieve their potential while fit and healthy adults enjoy a better quality of life are more productive and are better placed to raise fit and healthy children. When we successfully encourage fit and healthy families and workplaces we create the conditions for:
- Personal and professional success;
- Financial savings and reduced costs;
- Increase achievement and fun;
- People who can do more – study, travel, work, leisure;
- More opportunities for individuals families and organisations;
- Better quality of life for everyone involved;
- The potential for people to be all they can be;
- Reduced physical and emotional trauma related to poor health; and,
- Better relationships.
One of the biggest challenges in achieving health and fitness is creating the desire to be fit and healthy. So much of the community health and fitness message is one sided and tells us what not to do rather than why we should look after our health and fitness. Some examples include:
- Don’t smoke you will get cancer;
- Don’t eat junk food you will become obese; and,
- Don’t drink alcohol you will kill people in your car.
These messages are important but without the positive it is easy to ignore the consequences and people lack a reason to act.
- Do all you can to improve your lung capacity as you will have more energy for life;
- Strive for a healthy weight as you will perform better at work and at home; and,
- Be sober to enhance your relationships and look after the ones you love.
