Take control and be your own coach

Is taking charge of you own destiny important to you?

At so many levels other people are taking responsibility for our lives with rules, regulations and safety nets to protect us from ourselves with one of the consequences being it is easy to abdicate responsibility for our own actions, to live life on cruise control and to avoid taking charge of our life. The problem with this is dependence on others, living an unfulfilled life and over time we lose the ability to create the life we want.

Do you often rely on others to tell you what to do and it just never works out the way you want it to?

When we abdicate responsibility and completely rely on others to tell us what to do we are setting ourselves up for failure. Unless we are our own coach, our own CEO and our own critical adviser we are doomed for mediocrity and blaming others for our short comings. Regardless of whether we are taking about our physical and mental health and fitness, career development or relationships we are ultimately responsible for the choices we make and when we hand control of our lives to others we create a cycle that involves:

  • Abdication of responsibility;
  • Expecting others to solve our problems;
  • Frustration as others solutions don’t work for us;
  • Reliance and dependence on others; and,
  • Reduced ability to regain control of our lives.

We need to be clear that advisers, coaches, experts and other professionals play an important role in our success and we do well to listen to and act on their advice however we need to integrate and evaluate rather than follow without question as the costs of dependence is very high.

Counting the cost of dependence and under achievement

Handing over total responsibility to a coach, personal trainer, friend, partner  or boss for your success has many negative implications for your long term well being and ability to ultimately control you own destiny. Some of the implications include:

  • Injury;
  • Giving up as you fail to achieve your desired outcomes;
  • Feeling frustrated and resentful;
  • Eliminating personal responsibility as a habit in all you do;
  • Becoming miserable with a sense of helplessness;
  • Under performing,
  • Poor results;
  • Blaming others for what does not work;
  • Loss of potential and missed opportunities; and,
  • Working too hard or not hard enough.

The possibility of personal responsibility and self leadership

Taking charge of your life and accepting responsibility for making it happen is the starting point for achieving your desired future and living a fulfilling life. When we learn to do this in one area of our life, for example our health and fitness, we learn to apply the principles in everything we do and we are able to take advantage of the expertise of coaches, trainers and experts to manage ourselves and the outcomes we are seeking. When we do this it is possible to:

  • Lead yourself and together lead your relationship;
  • Create the future you want;
  • Engage and use experts for mutual benefit;
  • Generate desired success, achievement and confidence;
  • Learn and improve;
  • Take charge of your destiny;
  • Accept responsibility;
  • Commit to relationships and making them work; and,
  • Fulfill your potential.
