Achieve results with diverse personalities and abilities
Do you want to get along with more people and influence outcomes?Whether it is developing a successful partner exercise relationship, a personal relationship or getting along well with work colleagues we can achieve much more when we work well with others yet too often “personality issues” are seen as a reason for compromising what is possible and performing way below what is possible.
Do you think “People have such strong personalities I find it difficult to work with others as well as I would like?”Everyone is different and we all see the world through our own experiences and values which is a great opportunity for blending multiple perspectives and skills to do far more by working together than alone. It does have its challenges however and if you don’t address these challenges some of the problems you can expect to encounter include:
- Conflict and avoidance;
- Fractured relationships;
- Group thinking;
- Under achievement; and,
- Self imposed limitations.
Don’t tolerate poor relationships that aren’t workingUnfortunately relationship skills are not taught at school and unless you are either gifted or take steps to learn how to develop great relationships you will be confronted with a never ending range of “difficult personalities” with implications that include:
- Poor performance;
- Failed personal and professional relationships;
- Unhappiness and frustration;
- Avoiding problems and cycles of decline;
- Increased costs, reduced income in your business activities;
- Negative cycle;
- Waste of time and potential;
- Emotional unrest and trauma; and,
- Anguish and costs associated with ending relationships and starting new ones.
Diversity can lead to high performanceWhen we develop our relationships so as to use diversity and individual talents as a strength rather than a destructive force we open ourselves up to incredible possibilities and the ability to make use of combined abilities and aspirations. Some of the benefits include:
- Great relationships;
- Better performance than we can imagine;
- Cost savings;
- Increased income;
- Better quality of life;
- Satisfaction and potential; and,
- Reduced errors, mistakes, destructive conflict and wasted effort.
Taking steps to being good at working with diverse personalities enables you to discover what is possible.
Turning diversity into great relationshipsOvercoming the challenges of diverse personalities can be difficult to get started especially if those involved don’t realise there is a problem. The first step therefore is to recognise there is a problem or at least that you can improve. The following seven steps are tried and tested when it comes to enabling diverse views, talents and skills to work together for the benefit of all those involved.
- Recognise the problems.
- Agree to make a fresh start by “drawing a line in the sand”.
- Adopt a relationship approach that includes desired future and ground rules.
- Implement key concepts like ground rules.
- Develop relationship skills including listening and sharing problems.
- Review and learn what you have done.
- Reward, celebrate, improve and exit where required.
